Bad news, people. Liking Bright Eyes is more popular than liking Coldplay or Tool. I give you the evidence (highlight to see the awful truth).

And around the world was heard the sound of weeping indie kids.

naw, it's just that the person who wrote that perl/cgi-script, like every person everywhere, has been exposed to only certain kinds of music and artists. This is a reflection of his/her experience.

J5 would've been in the popular groap a few years ago. Like wise, use a foreign artist like Cloud Boy or the Lucksmiths and you're bound to be put in the unusual catagory.

On the contrary, this list was compiled from the expressed interests of all LiveJournal users.

Ehrm, by "On the contrary" do you mean "On the concordant"? What kind of demographic are bloggers?

Head-wanking, artistic, enlightened, indy-cultured, and affluent buggers (like English teachers in Japan) who tend to like head-wanking, artistic, enlightened, indy-cultured, and affluent music.

As Naomi Klein wrote in No Logo, anti-culture is now no longer underground or a sub-culture. It has risen to a marketing target. "We were too busy analyzing the pictures being projected on the wall to notice that the wall itself had been sold." Trying to find and like a band before anyone knows about them is quite pretentious (a la High Fidelity and beta-experimental ambient noise core), and ranking others' interests based on the acclaim of peers, while natural, isn't much different than high school bollocks.

"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently." F.N.

All I want to affirm is that the LiveJournal 'common' music ranking system has a bias built into it (and not from its algorythm, but from its input).
